botton+gardiner partnered with Melbourne Airport to deliver a cohesive, future-ready waste solution for one of Australia’s busiest transport hubs.
Engaged two years ago, botton+gardiner was tasked with designing a standardised suite of waste bins to replace the inconsistent mix used across both internal and external airport environments. The brief called for a solution that was durable, intuitive for users and adaptable across multiple environments.
Developed over a two-year design and trial process, the custom double Bondi bins were refined to address durability, usability and maintenance requirements. Testing informed key details including finishes, sizing, locking mechanisms and signage. Screen-printed graphics clearly guide waste separation, while a magnetic catch system replaces traditional keyed locks to simplify ongoing operations.
The resulting bin suite - available with hooded and capsule tops — is now being implemented across multiple upgrade zones, including bus shelters within the Long Term Car Park via contractors Programmed Maintenance. This standardised solution will continue to roll out across Melbourne Airport’s internal and external areas, with full completion targeted for 2026.
